Fashion, Fotos, and Fun! A Social Media Internship in Valencia, Spain

BTS Content Creation for Miquel Suay

For 8 weeks in Summer 2022, I was an intern at a ceremonial fashion boutique called Miquel Suay in Valencia, Spain! I am an international business major, and having an experience abroad before graduating was something that was very important to me. After looking through programs, I chose the ISA Internship program in Valencia and thought that the sandy beaches, fun nightlife, and good vibes would be a perfect fit. Valencia is the third largest city in Spain and is located on the east coast. It’s a very happening city, but not near as crowded as Madrid or Barcelona. I stayed with a host family and made friends with the other people in my program who had internships in all different industry sectors. It was awesome being surrounded by like minded people who I could go to for advice or a good laugh whenever I needed it.

Miquel Suay creates clothing for special events such as weddings, first communions, and other fancy parties. My job was to handle the social media accounts for the boutique. I also communicated with many companies that offered services for SEO and to help boost social media presence. The first few weeks were confusing to say the least. There was a slow start to actually posting because of the language barrier and overall lack of communication. This was also my first time holding a social media position, so my inexperience made things more difficult. My supervisor was very creative and had a certain vision for his brand, so by talking with him and looking at what was already posted I had to base everything I did off of that instead of just doing what I thought looked good. But, once I truly understood what my supervisor wanted and got the hang of Canva, Preview, and utilizing Instagram reels, things went much more smoothly. By the end of the 8 weeks, I had increased reach on Instagram by 1223% and engagement by 412%.

Though my social media skills grew a lot during this internship, and I do think social media is a fantastic skill to get better at because personally and professionally it can be such an impactful tool, I learned that a job in social media is not for me. This was very valuable to learn because had I not completed this experience, I would have easily taken a post grad job in social media without knowing it’s not something I’m passionate about.

As I’m beginning my final year of college, I think about what career path I want to take after graduating a lot! I know I could do a lot of different things, and my major allows for that flexibility which is great. I know for sure that the company I work for will have values that align with my own. I admire companies that are transparent, sustainable, and interesting! My first post-grad job might not be one that I stick with, but I know that each job I take on will teach me something very valuable, just like my internship did this summer.
