My name is Cali Brewer and this summer I had the amazing opportunity of traveling to Japan. Embarking on the University of Arkansas’ faculty-led intensive Japanese study abroad program in Japan has been an extraordinary experience that has ignited my passion for both the language and culture of this captivating country. As a computer science major with a Japanese minor, this program was a perfect fit for my academic pursuits and personal aspirations.
One of the key factors that drew me to this program was the opportunity to enroll in the Advanced Japanese class, which is a requirement for my Japanese minor. As someone who has been studying the language, immersing myself in Japanese culture and language was a dream come true. From the moment I stepped foot in Japan, I knew that this experience would enhance my language skills and deepen my understanding of the culture that has fascinated me since childhood. Despite the intensity of the summer class, I enjoyed the learning process during my time abroad. The daily schedule consisted of three fifty-minute classes, running from 9 am to 12 pm. Initially, I had concerns about the extended class duration, but the well-timed ten-minute breaks between classes made the sessions feel more manageable. While the classroom structure shared similarities with those at the University of Arkansas, the opportunity to learn and communicate in Japanese both inside and outside the classroom truly elevated my language proficiency.
This program solidified my desire to pursue a career in Japan after graduation. I had never been to Japan before this summer, so I did not know if I would be able to handle the differences in culture or the language barrier. However, I adjusted to the culture well, almost as though I had lived there all my life. As for the language, since I was communicating every day, I progressed significantly, and I can proudly say I could get by in Japan with my skills. Of course, I still have a long way to go, but that is more reason for me to return to Japan. I firmly believe that being at least proficient in the Japanese language will significantly enhance my prospects of securing a job in Japan.
Among the multitude of cherished moments, I experienced during my study abroad journey, one of the most remarkable was the opportunity to forge deep connections with Japanese students from the University of Arkansas’ partner universities. Their kindness and hospitality exceeded all expectations, leaving an indelible mark on my study-abroad experience. From the moment we were paired up with our Japanese counterparts, it was evident that we were creating a friendship that transcended borders. The warmth and generosity they extended to us were truly exceptional, there was never a dull moment with them. Whether we explored the city together during our free time or shared memorable class excursions, their presence added an invaluable layer of cultural exchange to our study abroad journey. The most memorable moment was the night we went out for karaoke. Lost in the song, we completely lost track of time and missed the last train back to the dormitory. However, none of us wanted to wait for the next train which was at 5 am, so we ended up walking for almost two hours back to the dorm. I didn’t even notice my bruised toe because we were all talking and sharing stories the entire walk back.
It was during our daily train rides that the true depth of my gratitude for our Japanese friends became evident. Navigating the intricacies of the train system and schedule was quite a challenge at first. But, with the help of our Japanese friends and what seemed like our almost endless amount of mistakes, we eventually got the hang of the train system. By the end of our trip, I would say all the Arkansas students could travel alone by train.
I wholeheartedly recommend this program to anyone who is learning Japanese. It offers an unparalleled experience that should be pursued without hesitation, as it has the potential to become the transformative adventure of a lifetime. As someone who had been studying the language prior to my journey, I was fortunate enough to possess a basic understanding of Japanese culture and useful phrases. For prospective travelers, I strongly advise researching on Japanese customs, etiquette, and societal norms. Familiarizing oneself with these aspects beforehand can greatly enhance the overall experience. Japan is a country with a rich cultural tapestry, and being aware of what is considered polite or impolite is crucial. Simple gestures, such as not tipping and removing shoes when entering someone’s home, can demonstrate respect and understanding. Additionally, learning a few key phrases in Japanese, such as ordering food or saying, “excuse me,” can go a long way in building connections with locals who deeply appreciate the effort.
While I never grew tired of savoring the exquisite flavors of sushi and udon, there were moments when I craved my home state’s renowned Tex-Mex. As soon as I returned to the States, I indulged in a generous bowl of chips and queso, followed by an order of tacos al carbon.
Studying abroad in Japan has already become a significant part of my identity. The experience was so immersive and fulfilling that I never once yearned for home because Japan already felt like home. The friendships I forged with both the locals and my fellow classmates from Arkansas became cherished bonds that continue to thrive beyond borders and distance.
Reflecting upon this extraordinary journey, I can confidently say that my study abroad experience in Japan has enriched my understanding of the world and shaped me into a more open-minded and culturally sensitive individual. The memories created, the lessons learned, and the connections established have become invaluable treasures that will forever resonate within me. If you are considering studying abroad in Japan, seize this opportunity that will expand your horizons, and foster personal growth. Embrace the Japanese culture, form meaningful connections, and savor every moment. Your journey will leave a significant impact on your identity, compelling you to return to the Land of the Rising Sun time and time again.
