As a Spanish major in Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences with a desire to work in service in the future, the Summer 2023 Spanish Immersion & Service Learning in Puebla, Mexico was the perfect fit for me. I recognized that immersing myself in a different culture and educational system would be a defining experience, and the program’s focus on Mexican culture, history, and language perfectly complemented my major, providing me an opportunity to deepen my knowledge in these areas.
After studying abroad in Spain in the summer of 2023, I knew I had a desire to continue strengthening my Spanish while exploring new cultures abroad. Mexico drew my interest due to many things: the rich cultural heritage and history of the country, Mexico’s contributions to art and literature, and the unique relationship it holds with the United States. This program was a unique opportunity to immerse myself in the heart of it all.
While abroad, I had the opportunity to take a Spanish class specific to service and education that gave me skills and confidence in the aspects of Spanish I plan to use the most. However, I found that I learned the most beyond the classroom. Mexico’s culture offered a vast array of experiences. The cuisine introduced me to a world of flavors and culinary traditions. From savoring street food to exploring local markets, each meal was an adventure in itself, and I came home with a new skill: the ability to eat spicy food.
The country’s architecture was a testament to its history and diversity. I marveled at the grandeur of ancient pyramids across the country and the colonial charm of Publea city’s historic center. The blend of indigenous and European influences was evident in the architectural gems scattered throughout the country.
One of the most impactful aspects of my time in Mexico was my involvement with Fundación MAJOCCA. As a Spanish major with aspirations for a service-related career, this opportunity allowed me to expand my language skills while engaging in meaningful work for the community. Our group was entrusted with the design and construction of a tire playground for a school located in a rural area that previously had no playground facilities. This undertaking proved to be an immensely rewarding and eye-opening experience.
Witnessing the collaborative spirit that permeated the project was truly inspiring, as volunteers from various backgrounds came together, pooling their expertise and resources, to create a safe and enjoyable space for the children. The joy and laughter of the children as they explored the newly constructed playground were undeniably the most fulfilling aspects of my time abroad. This experience with Fundación MAJOCCA has solidified my commitment to service-oriented work and reinforced my belief in the potential of community-driven initiatives. Additionally, it has heightened my awareness of the socio-economic disparities and challenges faced by marginalized communities, driving me to advocate for equitable opportunities and sustainable change.
I wholeheartedly recommend this program to other students. It’s an incredible opportunity for personal growth, cultural immersion, and academic enrichment. However, there are a few things I wish I’d known beforehand. First, gaining confidence in your Spanish before arriving can be immensely helpful, especially in more rural areas where English may not be as prevalent. Second, embrace spontaneity and be open to new experiences – you’ll make lifelong friends and memories along the way.
