As someone who has called Arkansas home for my entire life, the idea of studying abroad in Sweden felt like a leap into the unknown. With finals wrapping up, I packed my bags and embarked on a three-week journey across the pond, leaving behind the familiarity of education in Arkansas. The idea of immersing myself in a new culture, exploring healthcare systems in a foreign land, and stepping outside my comfort zone filled me with a mix of excitement and anticipation. This journey was filled with academic exploration, cultural immersion, and unforgettable experiences.
My journey began with two weeks at Jönköping University, studying in the building and with other university students in health sciences education. The depth of knowledge shared in classrooms with my peers and other Swedish students was inspiring. From engaging lectures to thought-provoking discussions with professionals in different health care fields. Every moment challenged me to think critically about the societal values and policies shaping healthcare all around the world.
This program provided a holistic view of healthcare systems through lectures, study visits, and hands-on experiences. One particular highlight was our deep dive into the public and private healthcare systems, along with insurance components. Comparing and contrasting these systems opened my eyes to the strengths and challenges inherent in each approach. It was a truly enlightening experience that broadened my perspective on overall global healthcare.
Studying abroad in Sweden came with its fair share of challenges, particularly adapting to a new place and educational system. From navigating transportation to understanding different teaching methods, there was a lot to get used to. Thankfully, I had amazing support from both professors and classmates, who offered guidance and encouragement every step of the way. Their support made the transition smoother and helped me feel more confident in my ability to navigate the new environment. Together, we formed a tight-knit community of international students, sharing experiences and overcoming challenges, which made the journey all the more enriching. It was a true example of what we had been learning, healthcare professionals must collaborate across disciplines to provide comprehensive patient care. Building strong relationships and fostering open communication, as I did with fellow students, is essential for interdisciplinary teams to effectively address complex patient needs and deliver the best possible patient care.
During the last week of my trip, I got to explore Stockholm in depth. Besides focusing on academics, I had some exciting adventures. We visited the Karolinska Institute, where I learned about cutting-edge medical research. City Hall and the Royal Palace were also on our itinerary. These iconic landmarks gave me a glimpse into Stockholm’s rich history and culture. From wandering its vibrant streets to exploring historical sites, every moment was a new discovery. It was an unforgettable experience that added depth to my trip.
Looking back, my study abroad experience in Sweden was nothing short of transformative. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, expanded my horizons, and deepened my passion for healthcare. As I return home, I carry with me a newfound appreciation for cultural diversity, a deeper understanding of global healthcare systems, and memories that will last a lifetime.
