Why Italy? A Journey of Academic and Personal Growth

Some friends and I in the Italian country
When I first considered studying abroad, the CIMBA program in Italy immediately caught my attention. Nestled in the charming town of Paderno del Grappa, this program offered a unique blend of rigorous academic coursework and immersive cultural experiences. As a business student, I was particularly drawn to CIMBA’s emphasis on business and management within a global context. The opportunity to study in Italy, a country with a rich history and vibrant culture, was too enticing to pass up.
Italy has always fascinated me. The allure of its art, architecture, and cuisine, combined with the prospect of enhancing my academic journey, made it the perfect destination. My interest in Italian culture was sparked during a high school art history class, where I first learned about the Renaissance and the masterpieces of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. This initial spark grew into a desire to experience Italy firsthand, to walk through its historic streets, and to immerse myself in its culture.
I spent the Summer 2024 semester in Paderno del Grappa, a picturesque town at the foot of the Dolomite Mountains. This location provided a serene backdrop for academic pursuits and a gateway to exploring Italy and beyond.
Academic Excellence and Cultural Immersion

Campus
My time at CIMBA was academically enriching and personally transformative. The program’s curriculum was rigorous, offering courses that challenged me to think critically and expand my knowledge. I enrolled in Molly Rapert’s Global Consumer class and Eric Olson’s Global Economics class. Each course was designed to provide a deep understanding of global business practices and cultural nuances.
One standout moment was a project for Molly Rapert’s Global Consumer class, where we delved into the Chinese market and its consumer behaviors. This project required extensive research, collaboration with classmates from different backgrounds, and a thorough understanding of both Chinese and global consumer trends. Presenting our findings to a panel of professors was a highlight of my academic experience, as it provided practical insights and real-world application of classroom knowledge.
Another unforgettable experience was participating in Eric Olson’s Global Economics class, which broadened my perspective on international economic policies and their impact on global trade. The discussions and debates in this class helped me appreciate the complexities of global economics and their relevance to business practices.
Beyond the Classroom: Personal Adventures and Lasting Memories
Studying in Italy was not just about academics; it was also about exploring new places and creating unforgettable memories. During weekends, I traveled to several iconic cities and neighboring countries, including Prague, Florence, Venice, and Pula, Croatia. Each destination offered a unique blend of history, culture, and beauty.
A particularly memorable trip was to Pula, Croatia. We took a bus from Paderno del Grappa, and the journey itself was an adventure, passing through beautiful landscapes and charming towns. In Pula, we enjoyed a day on a boat, exploring the stunning coastline and crystal-clear waters. This boat day was a highlight of my summer, as it provided a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration.

Florence
In Florence, we took a train from Paderno del Grappa and immersed ourselves in the Renaissance art and architecture. Visiting iconic landmarks like the Florence Cathedral and the Uffizi Gallery was an awe-inspiring experience. In Venice, we marveled at the intricate canal system and historic buildings, and the city’s unique charm left a lasting impression.
A trip to Prague by plane added another dimension to our travels. The city’s rich history and vibrant culture, combined with its stunning architecture, made it an unforgettable destination. Exploring the Prague Castle and the Old Town Square were highlights of this trip.
Day-to-day life in Paderno del Grappa was equally enriching. I loved exploring the local markets, trying out traditional Italian dishes, and interacting with the friendly locals. One of my favorite activities was hiking in the nearby Dolomites. The breathtaking views and the sense of accomplishment after each hike made these excursions truly special.
A Different Kind of Learning
Studying abroad with CIMBA differed significantly from my experiences on campus at the University of Arkansas. The smaller class sizes and the close-knit community fostered a more interactive and personalized learning environment. This setting allowed for more meaningful interactions with professors and peers, creating a supportive and collaborative atmosphere.
One of the challenges I faced was adapting to a new education system and cultural environment. Initially, I found it difficult to balance the demands of academic coursework with the desire to explore and experience Italy. However, this challenge taught me valuable time management skills and the importance of setting priorities. By the end of the semester, I had developed a routine that allowed me to excel academically while also making the most of my time abroad.
Lessons and Advice for Future Travelers
One valuable lesson I learned while studying abroad is the importance of stepping out of your comfort zone. Embracing new experiences, whether it’s trying unfamiliar foods, navigating a foreign city, or engaging with people from different cultures, can lead to personal growth and a broader perspective on the world.
For students considering studying abroad, my advice is to be open-minded and proactive. Take advantage of every opportunity to learn, explore, and connect with others. Prepare for cultural differences and be ready to adapt. Remember that studying abroad is not just an academic endeavor but also a chance to grow personally and professionally.
In conclusion, my semester with the CIMBA program in Italy was a transformative experience that enriched my academic journey and broadened my horizons. The knowledge and skills I gained, along with the unforgettable memories and friendships, will stay with me for a lifetime.
