Hi! I’m Abigail Alexander. I studied abroad in Ireland for two and a half weeks in the summer of 2024. I chose to study abroad because it’s something I’ve always dreamed about. I’ve always wanted to learn more about the world, and Ireland is particularly special to me because my family is from there!

Bunratty Castle
For my study abroad experience, I participated in a program called Health Care and Social Services in Ireland. Our group visited various healthcare facilities to compare the Irish and American healthcare systems. One of my favorite visits was to the Irish Wheelchair Association, which provides care, services, and activities to those who are physically disabled and mentally challenged. We spent two days with the association and interacted with both older adults and school leavers (young adults). My group and I had a so much fun playing trivia, singing karaoke, and debating with the young adults about whether being famous is good or bad. We even learned a beautiful song called “Home Away from Home,” about the joy of returning to Ireland after being abroad. It was may of the members favorite song and a great way to end our time with the Wheelchair Association.
During our visit to the Wheelchair Association, we got to talk to staff and member about Health Insurance in Ireland. It is extremely different from America. Ireland has both public and private healthcare systems. The Health Service Executive (HSE) funds most of the public healthcare, making it affordable for everyone. However, this affordability creates high demand and long waitlists. Many members of the wheelchair association face years-long waits for wheelchairs and doctor appointments.

Cliffs of Moher
Outside of our school days, we explored many parts of Ireland. My favorite excursion was to the Cliffs of Moher, which has the most beautiful landscape I’ve ever seen. The Cliffs are home to many birds. These included my favorite, the puffin, as well as razorbills and seagulls. There are miles of trails to hike where each turn shows different views of the Cliffs. We even visited a small castle on top of the Cliffs to see them from a different point of view.

Beautiful streets of Galway
In Galway, we visited the Latin Quarter. It is a lively area known for its music and vibrant atmosphere. The streets are filled with shops and booths selling handmade gifts. Every corner offers something new including musical performances, delicious food, and historical sites, Some of these historical sites included the Spanish Arch and Hall of the Red Earl. The Spanish Arch provided soldiers a great place to shoot off canons if there were pirates or people trying to invade Galway. The Hall of the Red Earl was built in the 13th century, making it the oldest building and home in Galway. There are just stones there now from the foundation but it was amazing to see just how long the town has been inhabited. Another highlight was The Crane Bar, where we enjoyed traditional Irish storytelling. Each week, they share a new story about Irish history or folklore, followed by musicians playing traditional Irish tunes.
We also spent some time in Dublin, where we visited Trinity College. The college is known for its historic campus and the Long Room library. This library has so many books, however while we were touring they were bring restored. But the library is most known for the Book of Kells, a version of the bible dating back to the 9th century. The book was an incredible historical manuscript that had the most gorgeous drawings and was embellished with gold accents.
Another highlight of Dublin was visiting the Guinness Storehouse. The tour of the storehouse was insane. The storehouse is incredibly big and had everything you would want to know about Guiness. It showed the history and brewing process of the famous Guiness beer. We learned about the ingredients, the brewing techniques, and the history of the Guinness brand. The best part of the tour was the Gravity Bar, which offers amazing views of Dublin from panoramic windows hundreds of feet up. You also get a free pint of Guiness at the end of your tour. And let me tell you, enjoying a pint of Guinness while overlooking the city was an amazing experience.
Overall, my study abroad experience in Ireland was enriching and unforgettable. It was filled with learning, cultural immersion, and breathtaking sights. I can’t wait to go back some day!
