Cycling around the island of Visingo
Sweden has always intrigued me with its picturesque landscapes and reputation for excellence in education and healthcare. My decision to study abroad in Sweden stemmed from a desire to experience these aspects firsthand and immerse myself in a culture renowned for its forward- thinking healthcare system. The opportunity to join the program at Jönköping University allowed me to explore these interests while enhancing my academic pursuits. I spent 3 weeks of summer 2024 living in both Jönköping and Stockholm, experiencing the best of both vibrant cities.
At Jönköping University, I focused on studying Sweden’s healthcare system, exploring social determinants of health and the accessibility for disabled individuals. I gained a comparative perspective by examining the differences between Swedish and U.S. healthcare systems. A highlight of my academic experience was touring both private and public clinics, where I had the opportunity to speak with physicians and gain firsthand insights into Sweden’s healthcare practices. These experiences provided a comprehensive understanding of the country’s approach to healthcare and its emphasis on inclusivity and accessibility.
Outside of the classroom, my adventures in Sweden were filled with unforgettable moments and exploration. One of the highlights was hiking in Hassafall, where I experienced breathtaking views of the Swedish countryside.
On a free day, I traveled to and toured the city of Gothenburg with friends, discovering its vibrant culture and historic sites. Wandering through the streets, visiting museums, and enjoying local cuisine made for a memorable excursion.

Touring the IKEA flagship store!
Exploring the city of Jönköping itself was equally as insightful. I spent countless hours walking through its picturesque streets, discovering quaint neighborhoods, and soaking in the local atmosphere. Learning to navigate the bus system in Jönköping was another valuable experience. It gave me the freedom to explore different parts of the city and truly feel like a local.
For students considering studying abroad, my foremost advice is to go with an open mind. Embrace the opportunity to meet new people and immerse yourself in a different culture. Talk to the locals—they can offer invaluable insights and enrich your experience in ways that go beyond the classroom. Building connections with local students and faculty not only helps you feel more integrated but also enhances your understanding of the cultural and academic environment. Be open to new experiences, and don’t hesitate to step out of your comfort zone. This mindset will help you make the most of your time abroad and create lasting memories.
These personal experiences, from hiking and touring new cities to mastering public transport, enriched my time in Sweden and provided lasting memories of my study abroad journey.
