After first hearing about studying abroad at CIMBA Italy during my freshman BLAW class, I knew it was an opportunity I had to pursue. The ability to study in a picturesque Italian town sounded too good to be true, and after spending an entire month there, I can say without a doubt it was a life-changing experience for which I am incredibly grateful. Neither of my parents have ever had the opportunity to go overseas, so I am profoundly thankful for this experience and the grant I received from the University of Arkansas Honors College that made it possible.

Exploring different cities, meeting new people, and immersing myself in a new culture are all expected parts of any study abroad experience. However, CIMBA goes beyond this by providing lessons in leadership, professional etiquette, and trips to local businesses, fostering both personal and professional growth as a business student. As I reflect on my time abroad, one lesson stands out: seize every opportunity that comes your way, and once you do, dive in completely.

My grandfather was the first in his family to attend college and had the chance to travel around Europe in his late 20s. Inspired by his stories and the results of his hard work, I wanted to follow a similar path and advance further in my family’s journey. Growing up in Edmond, Oklahoma, I chose to attend the University of Arkansas and the Sam M. Walton College of Business to propel myself forward and be the first in my family to travel out of state for college. When I heard about the opportunity to study abroad at CIMBA and the grants sponsored by the Walton Honors College, I knew this was another crucial step I needed to take. After dedicating over 12 hours to the study abroad grant application at the University of Arkansas library, I was thrilled to learn that I had received the grant.

Now, as I write this after returning from Italy, I realize how important it is to immerse yourself fully and seize every opportunity. Whether it’s saying yes to traveling with new friends from different universities or playing soccer (“futbol”) with local Italian students, making the most of these moments is key. My classes at CIMBA have reinforced this lesson. Over the past four weeks, I’ve gained valuable insights into global economics from Eric Olson, particularly regarding international trade benefits and the macroeconomic impacts of tariffs. Side note: when your economics professor invites you on a whitewater rafting trip, that is a definite opportunity to jump at. In Molly Rapert’s Global Consumer course, I visited several local businesses in Italy, exploring their business models, marketing plans, and engaging in in-depth discussions about global trade, especially in China.

After returning home, I will begin preparing for the LSAT and working to attend several law schools outside of my home in the Midwest. As I do this, I will ensure that I put everything I can into my goal of becoming an attorney. If any opportunity presents itself the way CIMBA Italy did, I will make sure to seize it and commit fully.
