My name is Riley Frymark and I am an Apparel Merchandising and Product Development major. I had the opportunity to attend the AMPD Edinburgh/London/Paris Study for the 2025 May intercession. The reason I choose the international study tour is because I have always had a strong interest in European fashion, designers, and culture. This trip would provide a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn about the European fashion market first hand, make connections, and immerse myself in the culture.
The AMPD International Study Tour was an unforgettable experience that not only expanded my knowledge of the European fashion market but also was an opportunity for new experiences and friendships. Even though our trip was only 2 weeks, each day was packed with museum visits, brand appointments, and other unique learning experiences. I felt like each city offered distinct cultural identities and fashion landscapes that allowed for a diverse experience. My goals for this trip were to deepen my knowledge of the European fashion market and trends, as well as immersing myself in the culture.
The first stop was Edinburgh, Scotland and I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect because the city is not as well known as London or Paris.. Although Edinburgh is not necessarily a fashion hub, it is well known for fabric production, specifically wool. I learned so much about fibers and textile manufacturing which is extremely valuable information to know when working in the fashion industry. I have only learned about textile production through lectures, so seeing it in person made it easier for me to understand. Scotland also has a rich history that includes cultural dress such as Tartans and Kilts. Kilts are deeply personal and special garments that represent the wearer’s family and are meant to be passed down generations. It was so interesting learning about another culture that I was not so familiar with before.
Our next stop was London, England and I was very excited to visit because I am a fan of a lot of British designers. Overall London was my favorite city we visited because of the bustling, big city feel. It reminded me a lot of New York City, but a little more slow paced. My impression of the London fashion scene is that it is very creative and innovative, but there is also an emphasis on tailoring. I really enjoyed learning about the history of London such as the arcades that used to serve rich Vicoritan women or the significance of Savile Row and its world famous suits. I also thought that London had the best vintage shopping, with a mix of both designer and affordable options. I felt like no matter where I was in London there was some sort of shopping, historical site, or restaurant.
The last stop of our trip was Paris and this was the city that I was most excited for. It has been my dream since I was a child to visit Paris, so this was a very rewarding experience. I think Paris is the most beautiful city that I have ever been to. I also loved Parisian fashion as it is very effortless, timeless, but feminine which fits really closely with my personal style. I also loved the appointments we went to because they were more centered around design and haute couture, which is what I am personally most interested in. Paris is known globally as the heart of fashion, and you can feel that influence through the city’s culture, history, and the way people present themselves. One of the most memorable parts of the whole trip was seeing the Eiffel Tower sparkle at night, which made for an unforgettable last night in Paris.
The knowledge I gained, experiences I had, and connections I made on this trip far exceeded anything I had anticipated. I am so grateful to have been able to participate in this once in a lifetime opportunity that has expanded both my professional and cultural knowledge, as well as providing me with memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.
