Exploring the London Bridge After Work!

Author: Ella Eureste | Major: Biology, Psychology | Semester:  Summer 2024

My Name is Ella Eureste and I am an honors third year biology and psychology student. I hope to pursue a career in healthcare at the intersection of medicine, public health and mental health. This past summer, I had the incredible opportunity to intern at Free to Be Kids, a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing the emotional needs of disadvantaged youth in London. My experience in this vibrant city not only shaped my professional journey but also profoundly impacted my personal growth. London’s rich culture, diverse communities, and the chance to connect with people from all walks of life made this internship an unforgettable adventure.

During my time at Free to Be Kids, I was tasked with several responsibilities that allowed me to contribute meaningfully to the organization’s mission. A major part of my role involved conducting referrals with parents to help their children gain admission to the program. Additionally, I assisted with administrative tasks, data entry, operations management, and participation in team meetings. I also directly worked with the children on project which was the most meaningful part of my internship. During project, I had the privilege of witnessing the transformative impact of adventure, positive adult relationships, and a nurturing environment on the kids.

While my internship was largely rewarding, it was not without its challenges. I had to adjust to the unfamiliar vernacular and cross-cultural differences commonplace in London. It took an open mind and lots of questions to effectively navigate these nuances. At times, I found myself confused by colloquialisms and local references that my colleagues used in everyday conversations. I often had to ask for clarification, which initially felt awkward, but I soon came effectively communicate with my co-workers and adjust to their way of navigating the workspace.

My internship taught me invaluable lessons about the nonprofit sector and my future career path. I gained practical skills in task prioritization and learned the importance of intentionality in the workplace. I was amazing with the diligence every member at Free to Be Kids acted with as they were deeply committed to the organization’s mission, and their dedication inspired me to approach my work in the healthcare sector with the same passion.

I also developed a greater understanding of the mental health disparities affecting children in London. Conversations with my colleagues shed light on the challenges posed by the National Health Service (NHS) and its impact on the well-being of vulnerable populations. This insight reinforced my desire to pursue a career in healthcare, where I can make a tangible difference in the lives of those facing similar challenges. As I move forward, I am excited to apply the skills and knowledge I gained during my internship to my academic and professional pursuits. I hope to be bring this perspective of inclusivity and wholistic health into my future career in healthcare provider, finding ways to make care accessible to disadvantaged communities.

This summer experience has instilled in me a sense of confidence and curiosity about the world. I recognize the importance of adaptability and open-mindedness when navigating new environments and cultures. I am now more determined than ever to embrace challenges, seek out new learning experiences, and make a positive impact in the field of healthcare. Reflecting on my time at Free to Be Kids, I am filled with gratitude for the friendships I forged and the personal growth I experienced. London will always hold a special place in my heart, and the lessons learned during this internship live with me as I embark on my future endeavors.
