This past summer, I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad in Stockholm, Sweden, through the DIS Summer in Scandinavia program. As a pre-Physician Assistant student majoring in Exercise Science with minors in Biology and Medical Humanities, I’ve always been curious about how other countries approach healthcare, especially those known for their accessible, preventative, and patient-centered care models. When I discovered that DIS offered a Medical Diagnostic course in Sweden, I knew it would be a perfect fit, both academically and personally.

Before my program began, I took a short trip with my sister to Edinburgh and Dublin. Exploring Scotland and Ireland before jumping into my coursework gave me the chance to soak in the beauty, history, and culture of the region. From hiking up Arthur’s Seat to visiting the Guinness Storehouse, it was a whirlwind of memories that helped set the tone for the adventure ahead.

Once in Stockholm, I spent three weeks immersed in the Medical Diagnostic course, which explored clinical reasoning, diagnostic testing, and medical imaging through the lens of the Swedish healthcare system. In addition to engaging lectures, we participated in two field studies that allowed us to learn directly from Swedish healthcare professionals. One of my favorite experiences was visiting a local mammography center, where we gained insight into their diagnostic techniques and the proactive, preventative measures that are a hallmark of Sweden’s healthcare approach.

Seeing how Swedish clinicians approached patient care with both technical precision and compassionate communication left a lasting impression. Being able to apply what we were learning in real time gave me a glimpse into the day-to-day responsibilities of a clinician. The experience also reinforced the importance of delivering diagnostic results with empathy and clarity, something that deeply resonated with me as a future PA.

Beyond the classroom, my experience in Sweden was just as impactful. Stockholm is full of charm and natural beauty, and the summer daylight seemed endless, giving us the chance to explore even after classes wrapped up. I spent my free time walking along the waterfront, exploring Gamla Stan’s cobblestone streets, and fully embracing the Swedish tradition of fika (coffee and pastries). With new friends from the program, I also ventured beyond Sweden, traveling to Budapest and Poland!

Compared to life on campus at the University of Arkansas, studying abroad challenged me to adapt quickly, whether it was navigating a new healthcare system, public transit in a foreign language, or balancing classwork with travel. But I loved every minute of it. Being immersed in new cultures helped me become more confident, open-minded, and independent. It also gave me a more global lens on healthcare, how it’s delivered, valued, and experienced in different parts of the world.

One thing that truly surprised me was how seamlessly Sweden’s healthcare system integrates public health into everyday life. From easy access to preventative care to widespread mental health resources, it’s clear that Sweden invests in long-term wellness. It made me reflect on the ways the U.S. system could evolve and what kind of healthcare provider I want to become.

The biggest lesson I took away is the importance of cultural humility and lifelong learning. Whether I was asking questions in class, trying unfamiliar foods, or learning how to navigate a new city, I learned to slow down, observe, and embrace the unknown. These are skills I know will help me not only in PA school, but throughout my career in medicine.

If you’re thinking about studying abroad, do it. It’s okay to feel unsure at first. Say yes to the experiences that scare you a little and excite you a lot. For pre-health students, programs like DIS offer a rare and valuable opportunity to see medicine through an international lens. And beyond the academics, you’ll come home with lifelong friends, unforgettable stories, and a stronger sense of who you are and who you want to be. Studying abroad with DIS in Stockholm was a turning point in my academic journey, one filled with learning, growth, and perspective that I’ll carry with me wherever I go.
