My summer internship as a Food Safety intern at Associated Wholesale Grocers in Kansas City was an unforgettable experience that allowed me to delve into the critical aspect of food safety at the distribution level. Over the course of the internship, I gained invaluable insights into how food safety protocols are meticulously incorporated into every step of the farm-to-fork process. From the moment the produce left the farm to its final destination on consumers’ plates, I witnessed the utmost dedication to maintaining food safety standards.
One of the most notable highlights of my internship was the opportunity to visit various AWG distribution centers and witness firsthand the rigorous measures taken to ensure the safe handling and transportation of food products. I learned about temperature-controlled storage, transportation tracking systems, and the implementation of best practices to prevent contamination. These visits provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the distribution process and how crucial it is in safeguarding the quality and safety of the food supply chain.
Additionally, I had the privilege of visiting suppliers and understanding the importance of sourcing high-quality raw materials to maintain food safety throughout the supply chain. Observing how the company selected suppliers, conducted audits, and maintained strict quality control standards, I realized the significance of building strong relationships with reliable partners to ensure a safe and reliable supply of food products.
Moreover, the internship took me to a reclamation center, where I witnessed the responsible handling of potentially compromised food items. This eye-opening experience taught me about waste reduction strategies, product recalls, and the company’s commitment to minimizing food waste while prioritizing consumer safety.
Lastly, I had the chance to interact with representatives from various departments across the company during meetings and workshops. These sessions provided me with a broader perspective on how different departments collaborate to achieve a common goal of upholding food safety standards and ensuring consumer well-being.
Overall, my internship with AWG offered me an enriching and educational experience in understanding food safety at the distribution level. I developed a deep appreciation for the dedication and precision required to maintain high standards in the food industry, ensuring that consumers can trust the safety and quality of the products they consume. This internship not only expanded my knowledge but also ignited a passion to contribute further to the field of food safety in my future endeavors.
