During these last couple weeks of summer, I had the privilege to go study abroad in Scotland and England, learning about topics spanning from public health, comparative healthcare systems in the UK and US, nursing, and even medical history on the most niche, interesting subjects. After coming back to the United States, I have been reflecting since then on my experiences, connections I’ve made, and photos I’ve taken on numerous excursions.
I recall applying for August intersession study abroad programs on Hogs Abroad like it was yesterday. After what felt like forever, I stumbled upon a program initially called “U of A Faculty-Led: History of Public Health in the UK”. I was already interested in public health after my initial exposure to it by taking a Medical Sociology course with one of my favorite professors, Dr. Michael D. Niño; I also wanted to further explore public health as a subject as I have always enjoyed a combination of hard sciences and more softer sciences. I also was accepted as a UAMS Stead Scholar at the time, so I figured it would mesh perfectly with my experiences that I already accumulated in public health. And mesh together, it did! I was quite nervous to discover that the course was an independent nursing one, as I have never taken a nursing course before. I also was a little bit reluctant on taking a course without prior knowledge, but professors Dr. Shreve and Mrs. Richardson had reassured me and continued to encourage me with words of affirmation after submitting assignments throughout the session. All in all, it was such a positive academic experience and I am very proud to say that I have come back with more knowledge on public health I hope to apply into my future career!
Something that truly captivated me throughout my experience was Scottish culture– everything from the Scouse accent, hospitality, and even the food were all so refreshing to me. I had the opportunity to try the iconic British fish and chips, listen to live bagpipes, and also practice my own Scouse accent. We also went to Glen Coe, The Three Sisters, a scenic mountain range in the Scottish Highlands featured in the Harry Potter and James Bond: 007 franchises. I also had the chance to see London in full effect– the hustle bustle, the culture, the food, and most importantly, seeing the effects of public health in society all were such sights to take in.
I am beyond thankful to finally mark England and Scotland off my bucket list. In terms of advice I have for other students, if you are able to, PLEASE study abroad. I’m sure you’ve heard of multiple people saying to take the leap and study abroad, but please, by all means, take my word for it and study abroad. It is truly such a life-changing, surreal experience that you will continue to look back to for years to come. And for my fellow pre-health students looking for an immersive, international experience I truly recommend this program; it is a perfect balance of medicine, nursing, public health, and culture. I really hope to study abroad in the future again!
