Spring 2024 in Rome wasn’t just a semester – it was a life-changing adventure. My lifelong fascination with Italy’s rich history and vibrant culture finally became an immersive reality. The cobbled streets whispered of emperors and gladiators, while bustling piazzas buzzed with modern-day energy. It was an irresistible draw, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint!
From the moment I arrived, I dove headfirst into the AIFS internship and study abroad program that brought history and culture to life. Classrooms seamlessly transitioned to hands-on experiences, making every lesson an adventure. Detailed journals became my travel companions, capturing the sights, sounds, and most importantly, the feelings of being truly immersed in a new world. These reflections not only fueled my personal growth but also provided invaluable insights and acted as my data collection for my honors creative project and even a future guide – “A Girl’s Guide to Study Abroad!”
But studying abroad goes far beyond textbooks. My internship at UP Factory and Fluoevents allowed me to work alongside passionate locals, organizing cultural events and promoting Italian heritage. It also allowed me to dive deeper into Rome’s social issues in its community and learn to better advocate for that. This wasn’t just a resume builder; it was a chance to connect with the community and gain invaluable professional skills that will benefit me for years to come.
Sure, the Colosseum at sunset was breathtaking, and sharing gelato with newfound friends in cozy trattorias created memories I’ll cherish forever. However, the true magic lied in the daily encounters – exploring ancient ruins, savoring delicious food, and engaging in lively discussions with locals. Each moment deepened my understanding of life in Rome, its complexities, and its undeniable beauty.
My travels took me on an exhilarating journey through the heart of Italy and beyond. From the enchanting streets of Florence and the romantic canals of Venice to the ancient ruins of Pompeii and the majestic peaks of the Italian Dolomites, each destination felt like a chapter from a dream. Wandering through the cobblestone streets of Florence, I couldn’t help but be captivated by the timeless beauty that surrounded me. The art, the architecture, every corner seemed to whisper stories of centuries past. Venice, with its winding canals and ornate bridges, felt like a living painting, each moment a brushstroke of wonder. Exploring the ruins of Pompeii was a humbling experience, a glimpse into the lives of ancient Romans frozen in time. And standing amidst the towering peaks of the Dolomites, I felt small yet profoundly connected to the grandeur of nature. The tranquil beauty of Lake Como and the colorful charm of Cinque Terre left me spellbound, while each new destination—whether it was the bustling streets of London, the serene landscapes of Switzerland, or the vibrant energy of Barcelona—offered its own unique tapestry of experiences. From the sun-kissed shores of Sicily to the quaint villages of Assisi, each place I visited left an indelible mark on my soul. And as I reflect on the journey, I can’t help but feel profoundly blessed to have had the opportunity to witness the beauty and diversity of our world firsthand.
As I reflect on my time abroad, a simple message emerges take the leap! Studying abroad is a transformative journey that pushes you outside your comfort zone, broadens your perspectives, and ignites a passion for lifelong learning. It’s an investment in yourself, one that will shape you both personally and professionally. So, pack your bags, embrace the unknown, and embark on your own unforgettable adventure!
